How-To: Simulate the sound of a telephone line

In the past I’ve needed to simulate a telephone call for a show where we had a “TV phone-in” sketch. This is how I created that distinctive “phone-call” sound.

How-to: Make a sound-effect sound like it's in the distance...

If you want a sound effect to sound like it is coming from some distance, you can just turn the volume down, but that misses the subtler effect that distance has on sound.

Here is a quick breakdown of the way sound changes over distance, and how you can simulate them to create a more realistic effect.

Mac OS X 10.6.x very slow booting and shudown?

A few months ago I replaced the HDD in my mac running OS X 10.6.4 with a solid state drive, which gave me a startup time of about 10 to 15 seconds, and would shutdown in less than 5. However, recently my mac started taking a lot longer than usual to startup and shutdown, over a minute to start up and the same to shutdown.

This is how I fixed it:

Safari 4 running slow? - Possible fix...

I’ve been using Safari 4 on the Mac since it was in beta, and it’s generally great.

However, if you use Top Sites feature, you may find that things start to slow down, or it takes up lots of drive space.

Here’s how to clean it up…

Programming Languages I 've Known and Loved/Hated

This is a list of all the programming languages I’ve used since I started at the age of 8, mostly for personal reference.

Listed by date first used. I’ve used most of the major ones since, but oddly, I’ve never needed COBOL or Occam again.

A note for language purists: My criteria for inclusion is pretty broad, so DOS batch and unix scripting get in. I’ve not included make, because, while it can have control structures of sorts (especially in pmake/BSDmake) these are just evil, wrong, and should never be used (or at least used vary sparingly)
